Seven Things You're Doing Wrong When It Comes to Skincare
Today I'm dishing on all things skin, or more so what you're doing wrong with your skin. Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies and because of that, we need to take care of it. When you get a pimple or a blemish it's always a little embarrassing. For me, they always seem to pop up at the most inopportune time. When they do pop up, I always begin to think about what I'm doing wrong in my skin routine, what isn't working, what seems to be helping, and how to prevent future blemishes. The thing is, our future blemishes are already lying underneath our skin. There are a few misconceptions that many have about their skin routine which could be causing this acne to continually surface. I mapped out seven below to maybe help you get your skin care routine on the right track.
Not Having a Separate Towel for Your Face --Your face harbors a lot of bacteria at the end of the day and your hands harbor even more. When you pat your face dry after cleansing, cleaning, washing, rinsing, or exfoliating if you don't have a separate towel for your face, you are rubbing the millions of bacteria from your dirty hands on your nice clean face. You might think this as insignificant but it's a big deal when it comes to your face. You should have a separate towel for your face and change it out every week. Having a nice clean towel will make a world of difference on your skin.
Not Sticking to Your Schedule -- You should be washing your face twice a day. Once in the morning, another time at night before bed. If you wash over two times a day, you are stripping your skin of the good bacteria and placing unnecessary irritation to your skin. Your skin will get used to this routine and if you skip a wash, it can tell. Sticking to your schedule will also help you better track your skin improvements. If you skip, it's like taking two steps back after taking a step forward.
Using the Wrong Products on Your Skin -- Another thing that you can be doing wrong in your routine is using the entirely wrong products for your face. Pay attention to your skin type and if your products are tailored to it. If you have oily skin seriously take that into consideration. If you have sensitive skin also take into consideration how often you exfoliate. Understanding your skin, how it operates, and which products work best with it is the first major step into correcting your skincare routine.
Not Enough Water -- Water is your skins best friend, use it. If you use a Clairsonic or any other type of face brush, make sure you use a lot of water. Dry bristles on dry skin will cause extreme irritation to the skin. If you don't make sure to use a lot of water on your face and moisturizer once you cleanse. In addition to water directly on your skin, drinking water will work wonders for your skin. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will increase your skin elasticity, prevent skin aging, flush toxins out of your skin, maintain your skin's pH, and keep acne and blackheads away.
Exfoliating Too Often -- This is common misconception that people have when they first get into their skincare routine. Many think that one has to exfoliate every night after they cleanse or even every other day. Truly, your skin needs to be cleansed one to two times a week and that's it. Exfoliating is tough on your skin and over working it on your face will cause extreme irritation and will actually scrub away the healthy acne skin cells which protect your skin's natural barrier.
Not Investing in Your Skin -- There are a few things that are worth investing money into and one of those things is your skin. By investing the money in a well reviewed and highly acclaimed toner, cleanser, moisturizer, spot treatment, and exfoliator is well worth the money. Knock off and bargain brand skin care items most likely won't cut it if you want to keep your young skin staying fresh. Think about it -- your skin will be with you for the rest of your life. Jeans, shoes, and accessories are all replaceable but your skin is here to stay. Invest in it now because it will keep aging and wrinkling at bay for when you get a little older.
Confusing Makeup Remover for Facewash -- A big thing that people do with their skin is treat their makeup remover like face wash. Yes, makeup remover is a huge step in your face routine but it shouldn't be the only step or fill in for other steps. The first think you should do in your routine is take off your makeup whether it's with a towelette, micellar water, or a wipe. That doesn't mean that because it takes your makeup off that it's also cleaning your skin. You need to remove your makeup, then clean your pores of left over makeup, toxins, pollution, and any other gunk that is left over. Your makeup remover cannot and will not fully clean your face. If you remove your makeup and still have left over acne, a big reason why is because you aren't properly cleaning your face.
